A Ton of Comfort
When it comes to HVAC systems, the term “ton” has nothing to do with weight. The measurements used to size the systems date back to a time when keeping things cool required daily deliveries of ice. When mechanical refrigeration systems were introduced, their cooling capacity was defined by the tons of ice they could replace. Today, the unit ton is used in air conditioning to calculate heat absorption. The amount of heat the system can remove is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs). One ton of cooling is equivalent to 12,000 BTUs per hour.
Why Big Isn’t Better – HVAC Sizing
While an oversized system has all the power it takes to keep you comfortable, it often falls short on performance. An air conditioner or heat pump that’s too large tends to cycle off before the cool air can circulate through your home.
